Pregnancy-Benefits with Chiropractic Care
Congratulations if you are either preparing for a pregnancy and/or are already pregnant! During this time, there are a lot of changes that happens to your body during pregnancy and it can be scary and exciting. When you realize you are pregnant you add extra responsibilities in your life to prep and welcome a new member to your family. Questions will start to run through your mind, like, “Is my lifestyle is fit?” Your diet becomes a question and you may wonder what you must do or change to prep your mind and body for this pregnancy. There are multiple professions out there that could assist you throughout this moment of your life including OB/GYN, mid-wives, doulas, massage therapist and chiropractors. The best advice for mothers is to be educated with your options of care and that you have every right to bring forth questions in regards to your care. Staying active and maintaining your health as a mother is very important to the health of your developing baby.
Optimizing your nervous system and integrity of your spine is a fantastic start. The brain is known as the control center that regulates and controls how our bodies function. By doing so, the brain sends nerve impulses through the spinal cord and nerves which are attached to every cell, tissue and organ such as the uterus! Maintaining the spine and nervous system is what chiropractors specialize in. Nervous system maintenance not only benefits the mothers but the developing fetus.
At this time, there are a lot of changes that occurs when you are pregnant to support the developing fetus. The changes are needed but it could lead to multiple symptoms and complications.
The body is working overtime and is trying to nourish you and the baby. Hormones are constantly changing contributing to symptoms like fatigue, nausea, headaches, mood swings and constipation.
Other changes include woman’s posture throughout pregnancy. For instance, enlargement of the breast tissue causes the upper back to round forward contributing to back pain, shortness of breath, neck pain, heart burn and indigestion. As the baby develops, the abdomen protrudes out and pulls the pelvic forward. When the pelvic is tilted forward it increases stress on the intervertebral discs and facets of the spine. Increased stress on the lumbar spine causes certain muscles such as, the iliopsoas and piriformis, to contracts in attempt to stabilize the lumbar spine and pelvis contributing to muscle spasm, sciatica, direct pressure on the lumbosacral nerves and/or low back pain.
In fact there are studies out there stating 50-80% of pregnant women will suffer from low back pain and 65-85% of women do no seek care because they believe it is normal. The changes and symptoms are normal but the typical treatment is a watch and wait approach since medication use is strongly discouraged in many cases. Chiropractic care is natural and can help prevent and/or alleviate those symptoms.
Chiropractic is the most popular non-invasive therapy out there, specializing in maintaining the integrity of the spine and nervous system through adjustments and therapy. There are absolutely no known contraindications for care during pregnancy. In fact, there are more benefits for the mother and baby.

There are so much more benefits for the mother and infant chiropractic can help with and should be provided before, during and after pregnancy. Once again, your body changes when you deliver your baby and receiving care could help rehabilitate the body and make sure there is proper nerve flow and function. Now that the baby has entered our world, definitely have the baby checked out by a chiropractor as well. (Stay tune for another blog in regards to infant care.)
