Chiropractic and Massage

Chiropractic works with the body to align the individual spinal vertebra, thus allowing the nervous system to function at its optimum potential. When the bodies nervous system is working at 100% the body is able to adapt better and aches and pains seem to go away. Chiropractic and Massage therapy work in similar ways because they both help with muscle relaxation and pain relief.

Chiropractors are health care professionals that require a 4 year undergraduate program before entering the chiropractic doctorate program. During this doctorate program they are trained extensively in the human anatomy and physiology as well as numerous national boards exams. Chiropractors understand that every tissue in the body is influenced by the nervous system and if the nervous system is not functioning at 100%, then the body is not able to function at its optimum potential. When chiropractors adjust the segments of the spine, the nervous system is allowed to freely flow throughout the body.

Massage therapists work with muscles and connective tissue with many different techniques including petrissage, effleurage, kneading, squeezing, and many more to help relieve tension and pain in the muscles. By doing any number of these techniques massage therapists can successfully relieve muscle tension and pain allowing the muscles to relax.

Should I get a massage before or after my chiropractic adjustment?

Depending on the circumstance of the patient, massage can be beneficial both before and after a chiropractic adjustment. If a patient were to receive massage before their adjustment the muscles will be more relaxed. These muscles are connected to the bones in your spine and when these muscles are relaxed they allow the bones to move more easily making the adjustments easier for your chiropractor. A lot of times when the joints of your spine move out of place the surrounding muscles will get used to the position they are in. A massage after an adjustment can relax those muscles and prevent them from pulling the bones out of misalignment again. Both ways can be beneficial to the patient to recover more quickly and easily.

Do I need a chiropractor or a massage therapist?

In many cases you may need both. If you feel that you have any limited range or motion, acute pain, numbness or tingling, it is likely that you need a chiropractor. Chiropractors correct misaligned segments in the spinal column, which allows the nervous system to flow freely. Numbness, tingling, pain, or limited movement is often considered a chiropractic problem. If a patient has increased muscle tone, tightness, or soreness in the muscles it is often something a massage therapist can help with. Tightness, soreness, and stress are all things that a massage therapist is able to help with by working with the muscular system to decrease tone and allow those muscles to relax.

Can chiropractic or massage help with stress?

Many people often think about massage therapy to help cope with stress and they are completely correct. Massage can help relax the muscles of the neck and shoulder. These are often the muscles that pull our shoulders up to our ears when we are stressed out. What most people don’t think about is how chiropractic can help with stress. When the body is regularly adjusted it is able to adapt to its outside forces without any negative effects. One of those outside forces being stress, allows the body to deal with that stress and adapt accordingly.
